EMI and RFI Shielding Materials

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) refer to unwanted electromagnetic noise and the effect it can have on a device or cable. RFI and EMI shielding can have several potential applications. Use it to:

Prevent an electronic device from producing unwanted interference
Prevent an electronic device from being affected by outside interference
Contain or exclude RFI/EMI while also pressure sealing an electronic device
Ground an electronic device

Any device whose performance would be impacted by interference should include proper shielding. Different shielding materials are better suited to some of the above tasks than others. Some of the more common materials used in commercial and industrial components include:

Plastic Compounds:Standard elastomers, such as silicone and polycarbonate, can be impregnated with carbon or stainless-steel fibers to provide immunity from EMI or RFI emissions. Connector gaskets and othercomponents found in automotive, aerospace or other systems typically use these materials. Plastic EMI shielding is flexible, cost-effective and easy to work with, particularly if you’re machining EMI/RFI shielding to a specific shape.

Metals:Thin strips of metal can also be used for EMI shielding. Common materials include copper, aluminum and pre-tin plated steel. These provide protection against interference across the RF spectrum, as well as good conductivity and a high strength-to-weight ratio. Potential applications include medical devices and consumer electronics.

Laminates:Laminate materials contain an electrically conductive metal layer — typically copper or aluminum foil — and a dielectric base such as PVC, Mylar or PP. Laminate shields are affordable, lightweight and thin. They have a range of potential applications, including consumer electronics and telecommunications devices with flexible printed circuit boards.
